GN 497 provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in an aspect of genetics education research and/or developing, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of materials for use in the genetics classroom. A minimum of 135 hours must be completed for the three hours credit. The experience must be arranged by the student and approved by the Director of the Undergraduate Genetics Program in advance of beginning the work. To gain approval, students must submit the completed GN 497 Contract, signed by their GN 497 Teaching Mentor and by their academic advisor. The student is required to write a scientific paper evaluating the results of their project. In addition to the work described in the contract, students will complete a series of reflective written assignments during and at the end of their GN 497 experience.

Our current GN 493 class allows students to gain either research or teaching experience. We are proposing to restructure the courses according to the type of experience. We propose GN 496 as a Research Experience in Genetics and GN 497 as a Teaching Experience in Genetics. We also want to add a bit more substance to the experience by requiring students to complete written reflection assignments during the semester in addition to completing the scientific paper on their teaching project. The scientific paper and the answers to the reflection questions will be used in assessment of the undergraduate Genetics program.

GN 497 provides an opportunity for students to gain teaching experience in a genetics course and to either develop, implement and evaluate materials used in the classroom or conduct research in teaching methodologies. Students will also gain experience in scientific writing by writing a scientific paper on their teaching project.

Student Learning Outcomes

After completing GN 497, students will be able to:

  • Describe the goal of the project with which they were involved and their specific role in that project. Such goals should include the development, implementation, and testing of materials for use in the classroom, research in teaching methodologies, or similar activities.

  • Evaluate results from their project and present them in the form of a scientific paper.

  • Describe the professional competencies they developed or deepened through their GN 497 experience.

  • Explain how they applied their academic (in-class) experiences to their GN 497 experience.

  • Describe the knowledge and skills they gained or further developed through their GN 497 experience.

  • Describe how their GN 497 experiences changed or strengthened their academic or career goals.

  • Explain how their understanding of teaching and/or learning was impacted by their GN 497 experience.
