Is the course required or an elective for a Curriculum?
No
This course is designed to expand opportunities for senior veterinary students to participate in a 2 week practicum in epidemiology, public health, or public policy under mentorship of experienced State, Federal, or private organization professionals. Students select their area or topic of interest and consult with the Focus Area Leader and submit a short proposal for review. Students work under supervision of an approved professional. Focus Area students may repeat the 2 week experience 3 times for a total of 6 weeks.

Opportunities like the ones offered by State or Federal Government and International or non-governmental organizations (e.g., NCDA, USDA, FDA, WHO) provides invaluable and unique practical access to contacts and learning that helps students decide career paths, increases their knowledge base, and allows for additional academic training through discovery.

College of Veterinary MedicineMaria CorreaConsultation with the Office of Student Affairs and Dr. Jennifer Neel, Assistant Dean of Student Development. Dr. Neel wanted Extramural in Epi course to address students who were using Special Topics in Epi as a de facto extramural. This helps distinguish between extramurals supervised by others and courses where faculty are still supervising regardless of if some of the work is off or on campus.
No new resources required.

Varies depending on externship focus (i.e., epidemiology, public health, public policy).  Observe, participate, receive hands-on experience, or conduct research in different settings.

mlnosbis 9/1/2017:
1) Effective date should be Spring 2018 or later; it is too late for Fall 2017
2) Maximum credit hours received should not be 120; if the max credit hours is 6 and students can take the course 3 times, this value should be 18.
3) Can students take this more than once per semester?
4) Confirm that this is Fall and Spring only; no summer possibility?
5) Consultation- what did Jennifer Neel say about the course? Insert her consultation summary in the consultation summary field.
6) Course description on the CIM form should be the same as that on the syllabus.

Kirk's replies:
1) Effective date should be Spring 2018 or later; it is too late for Fall 2017. KIRK: was hoping for retroactive. We have done this once before. There were extenuating circumstances why faculty could not complete, so we temporarily scheduled students for the Special Topics in Epi course. We could keep them there, but for accuracy are hoping for a Fall 2017 activation (i have extended scheduling access due to unique nature of clinical year, so can still schedule and drop people).
2) Maximum credit hours received should not be 120; if the max credit hours is 6 and students can take the course 3 times, this value should be 18. KIRK: Can take 1 6-credit course, or 3 2-credit courses or some combination therin but no more than 6 total credits. Updated accordingly.
3) Can students take this more than once per semester? KIRK: Yes. Can take up to 3 times in one semester.
4) Confirm that this is Fall and Spring only; no summer possibility? KIRK: Fall and Spring only are correct.
5) Consultation- what did Jennifer Neel say about the course? Insert her consultation summary in the consultation summary field. KIRK: added to field
6) Course description on the CIM form should be the same as that on the syllabus. KIRK: Resolved inconsistency by updating Syllabus
