Inspired by the university teaching hospital model, the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic is a place where students, faculty, entrepreneurs, and service providers go to teach, learn and build the next generation of businesses in Raleigh. Each person in this class will take on the role of "Clinic Lead" managing groups of undergraduate students working with clients of the NC State Entrepreneurship Clinic during the semester developing ideas, evaluating options, and providing insights to emerging ventures.

This is an action to create a new course, MBA 579- Entrepreneurship Clinic Practicum.

The goal of this class is to give MBA students experience as Lead Clinicians and prepare them for opportunities after their NC State experiences. "Lead Clinician" means that these students will take responsibility for enrolling a client in the clinical process and completing a project with that client.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Differentiate between the different venture growth processess—and explain how a growth-oriented venture chooses (and implements) the optimal course of action via the exploration of potential opportunities.

  2. Interpret, critique, and communicate opportunities for managing the processes of opportunity identification, exploration, and exploitating with the aim of giving students’ the Clinic Lead role in the NC State Entrepreneruship Clinic.

  3. Define what entrepreneurship is and what makes it unique from other forms of organizing.

mlnosbis 7/27/2017:
1) Effective date should be Spring 2018 as this will not be approved in time for Fall 2017 scheduling.
2) Course length should be 16 weeks; week 16 is the final exam.
3) The justification implies that this action is a course revision for MBA 570. I suggest rephrasing to prevent confusion, because this is not replacing MBA 570, this is a separate course. There is another course action for MBA 570 to update that course. This action for 579 is a different course; the relationship between the two should be clarified.
4) Syllabus- include item 14 from the syllabus checklist (General NC State PRR guideline)

pjharrie - 7/28/2017 - I find it odd that the 'component type' is chosen as 'lecture' when the title suggests that it's a practicum. In the objectives, what is a 'Lead Clinician' in the context of business? Maybe that's obvious to those in the discipline, but... The learning outcomes as written would seem to be quite difficult to actually assess, so I think they should be reconsidered.

ABGS Reviewer Comments:
-I do not understand, nor can I see much difference between the on line and the on campus version. Given that this class requires the leading of other students it is not clear how that would be accomplished in the on line mode.
-The course objectives seem a bit unclear and exactly how they will be assessed is also unclear.
-Is practicum the correct course component to use for this course? https://oucc.dasa.ncsu.edu/courseleaf-2/instructional-formats/

mlnosbis (Thu, 03 Aug 2017 18:23:59 GMT): Rollback: Course length is 16 weeks with week 16 being the final exam. Please edit the topical outline.
jmpolla3 (Mon, 28 Aug 2017 15:48:17 GMT): I have updated the weeks of the course to add up to 15, so that week 16 is reserved for the final exam.
mlnosbis (Mon, 28 Aug 2017 15:58:00 GMT): Rollback: Please address the ABGS Reviewer Comments as listed in the Additional Comments section at the bottom of the course action.
jmpolla3 (Tue, 29 Aug 2017 18:25:17 GMT): mlnobis 7/27/2017: 1. I changed the effective date. 2. I changed the course length. 3. I updated the justification. 4. I see that point #14 is Safety and Risk Assumptions. That is already included in the syllabus: as "None." This is consistent with the online nature of the class. I changed the delivery method to be only online--right now, this is only an online class. Note: If you have additional questions, please call my cell 804-397-0818 and I would be happy to discuss this further. pjharrie - 7/28/2017 1. The component type as lecture is fine. There are lectures in this class to provide the details needed to do the practicum. 2. A Lead Clinician is someone who takes responsibility for managing a project for a client company. For students/faculty in this context, it is clear. 3. Given that this is a practicum, I am comfortable with the learning outcomes as written--in particular, each student gets something different from the experience, and so the learning outcomes are consistent with this broad approach. Note: If you have additional questions, please call my cell 804-397-0818 and I would be happy to discuss this further. ABGS Reviewer Comments: 1. I have taught this class 3 times in person and 2 times online. Leading other students in a project has nothing to do with the in-person vs. online context. Actually, it tends to work better online. And, I plan to only offer it online--so, I changed the delivery method to be online only. 2. As to the course objectives, given that this is a practicum, I am comfortable with the learning outcomes as written--in particular, each student gets something different from the experience, and so the learning outcomes are consistent with this broad approach. 3. Yes the practicum is the correct component for this class. Note: If you have additional questions, please call my cell 804-397-0818 and I would be happy to discuss this further.
