Survey of staged musical works spanning four centuries. Emphasis on large-scale dramatic works in the genres of opera, operetta, and musical. Designed for students with musical and/or theatrical experience. Students may be required to provide their own transportation to and cover the cost of an on- or off-campus event.

The current title is ambiguous with respect to actual course content. The phrase “Music Drama” specifically refers to certain operas of Richard Wagner, and Wagner’s works are only one category of opera discussed. “Musical theater” broadly applies to “sung dramatic works” (McLamore), including opera, operetta, and musical. To the specious argument that musical theater is entirely distinct from opera, Stephen Sondheim replied, “The only thing I have to say about the difference between opera and musical theater is that opera is musical theater that takes place in an opera house in front of an opera audience.”


The catalog description is revised to (1) change “musical theater” to “musical,” and (2) add a transportation and admissions cost requirement. There is no change to the course content, which continues to center on opera, operetta, and musical.
