Survey of literary and cultural contexts of medieval and early modern Spain (12th to 17th centuries). Examination of literary genres in connection with concurrent cultural and historical events. Exploration of literature as a reflection of the experiences and events meaningful to Spanish society during this time period. Emphasis on the ways in which literature and other cultural artifacts give voice to value systems, traditions, and beliefs.

These revisions-- adjustments in prerequisites-- are part of a plan to increase the number of yearly graduates who major in Spanish.

• Identify and explain themes encountered in middle age and early modern Spanish literary texts.
• Interpret literary texts in their cultural, social, and historical contexts.
• Identify and explain key cultural, social, and historical events of medieval and early modern Spain.
 
 
Students will watch several documentaries from the Spanish National TV on the history and culture of medieval and early modern Spain. They will have to write a short essay focused on one specific historic event and explain how this event had a considerable impact in shaping Spanish culture of the period. Minimum: 300 words.
 
 
• Evaluate the art of interpretation as a critical approach to the study of literature and culture.
 
 
Sample assignment: Compare and contrast a literary piece and an artistic work that share the same theme (a religious character or episode, pastoral life, American discovery, war scene, etc). Students will have to analyze the ideological purpose of each work and how the literary and artistic genre deploy different techniques. Minimum: 300 words.
 
 
• Using appropriate literary constructs, critically examine thematic intersections between medieval and early modern Spanish literary pieces and their cultural and historical contexts.
 
 
Sample assignment (take-home essay question): Propose a concrete argument about a topic related to the continuities and ruptures between medieval and early modern Spanish culture and how these are represented in the cultural artifacts of the period.

Minimum: 600 words.

Sample assignment: Write a short essay that examines how Spanish culture represented the change that Spain underwent from being a heterogeneous territory where Jews, Muslims, and Christians coexisted to becoming a homogenous nation leading a large empire. Minimum: 300 words.

Students will demonstrate understanding of the commonalities and differences between Spanish and Western culture in the medieval and early modern period.
 
 
Sample assignment: Each student will have to present a comparative analysis between one of the works covered in class with one Italian, French or British short literary piece from the same time period selected by the professor.
