Applying methods of risk analysis to evaluate options for dealing with climate change, this course will introduce appropriate statistical methods and develop applications to climate-change related issues. This course provides practical hands-on experience for professionals in analyzing climate risks and developing adaptation strategies in climate sensitive sectors. The specific content will rely heavily on case studies in hydrology, health, energy, and transportation sectors.

The Climate Risk Analysis course will provide core knowledge in adaptation risk analysis and policy process.  This course is required for completion of the Climate Change & Society Master’s program and Graduate Certificate).  The MEA 517 Fundamentals of Climate Change Science Course course or equivalent is the prerequisite for the course.  This course has been taught for three consecutive years.  We anticipate significant increase in enrollment via the launch of the online version, which has been funded and supported by DELTA.


The need for climate risk analysis expertise and outreach is now well established as demand for climate adaptation expertise grows.  Adaptation has become a focus area of concern and activity across private, government and NGO sectors as impacts affect human life socio-economically.   This need has been established in multiple journal articles, government reports, business journals and newspaper articles (see below).

CE 772 deals with the risk assessment methodology and paradigm related to quantification of risks to human health and ecological systems from exposure to contaminants in the environment. CE 772 doesn't seem to have much overlap with MEA 518 based on the description.
This course has previously been offered as a special topics course and is part of an existing faculty member's regular course load. Standard library services provided via the University. The course will be offered both in-person and online.

The course reviews current models for linking climate science and adaptation strategies and policies.  The course also provides experience for students in analyzing climate risks & development of adaptation and mitigation management strategies/policies in climate-sensitive application sectors.

  4. Apply projected sector performance metrics information to identify optimal practical policy/management options for adaptation to climate changes.
