Corequisite: FOR 504
Is the course required or an elective for a Curriculum?
No
Development of site specific prescriptions to establish stands for a wide variety of objectives, including fiber, water, wildlife, recreation and health. Emphasis on forest communities of North America.

Increasing numbers of our graduate students arrive without sufficient backgrounds in silviculture, a critical component of some areas of forestry.  Years ago we developed a one credit mini-course for FOR 507 in silviculture to address this gap, but experience has shown that course content is too limited for students seeking careers in traditional forest management, where silviculture is a critical skill.  This proposed course is needed to provide a more comprehensive coverage of silviculture at the graduate level.

Dear Dr. Roise,

I am responding for the Genetics Program to your request for consultation on FOR 504 and 506. We have reviewed the content of these course and find no overlap or pre-requisite relationship with GN 725, Forest Genetics.

Please let me know if you require additional information.

Best wishes,

mlnosbis 2/3/2016: No overlapping laboratory courses. Suggest consultation with Genetics DGP because of GN 725- Forest Genetics.

ghodge 2/8/2016 Ask for consult with genetics. Need to include the dame of the graduate faculty who developed the course. Return to department.

ABGS Reviewer Comments:
-More details needed on syllabus about grading and weights for better understanding of what is expected from the student.
-New course, why is it not first taught as a special topics? Such allows flexibility in course refinement and tests the enrollment numbers.
-Syllabus grade is listed as S/U, but a 500-level course must be letter-graded.
-Syllabus does not include a grade calculation.
-This is a graded course. On what basis do students earn a grade? Simply going on the field trips? If so, what grade will all students earn? The syllabus states what happens if assignments are turned in late, but what are the assignments or at least example of potential assignment ... some type of report for the field trips? Are there two field trips for week 10?
-Can a corequisite be optional? 504 is listed as coreq on this action, but the action for 504 lists 506 as optional.
-Is course required? Why not just indicate “yes” as it is stated that it will be?

ghodge 3/30/2016 Ask instructor to edit syllabus:
Add grading section. Explain the weighting for grades on lab assignments, participation, and attendance. Explain the impact of unexcused absences and late assignments. Also give more details about why attendance is so important and how grades will be assigned for attend/absence

Remove or edit section on S/U grading as S/U grading is not allowed for this 500 level course

Comment: a co-requisite could be optional
