This seminar will provide an introduction to the expectations, goals, and community of the Goodnight Scholars Program. Emphasis is on professional development, group collaboration, interdisciplinary teamwork among STEM and Education majors, problem exploration, and civic responsibility. Restricted to first year students in the Goodnight Scholars Program.

We piloted our first year seminar in Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 under the USC 298 course code.  It has been an outstanding addition to the Goodnight Scholars Program.  Through our fall course evaluation, ClassEval, informal discussions with first year students, and discussions as a staff, we are convinced that this class has been a success and met both the learning outcomes for the course and mission of our program.  We have learned a lot in the process, and plan to update the course based on our experiences and findings this year. That said, we are confident that the spring course structure (one-credit, S/U, 8 class sessions, one hour and fifty minutes each) is an effective format.  We are requesting two new courses (USC 250/251) since we would like these to be permanent course offerings that are required of our first year students each year.  USC 250 would be offered in the fall and USC 251 would be offered in the spring.

I am committed to teaching this course as part of my regular job responsibilities. My professional staff (one full-time and two graduate assistants) also assist with the delivery of this course. This course is and will continue to be a primary element of our programming offerings and student expectations for first year scholars.

This seminar will emphasize professional development, group collaboration, interdisciplinary teamwork among STEM and Education majors, problem exploration, strategy development, and civic responsibility.

presentation25Each team will create and present a poster during the last class. Posters will highlight the problem that each team explored and the strategy the team proposes to address it, as well as relevant citations.
Project50Each team will submit a minimum viable product(MVP). The MVP should describe the strategic vision that the team has for addressing the problem they have identified. MVPs may include a broad range of final “products,” including, but not limited to: a prototype, sample curricula, video or other multimedia, proposal for future research,website or other web-based platforms, program description, etc.
